Healthcare professionals experience a disproportionate level of exposure to stressful events, but rarely receive adequate support in processing them. I have advanced training and experience working with the unique culture of medical settings, from medical school through retirement, treating:
- Burnout and stress management
- Difficulty setting boundaries and identifying needs
- Impact of vicarious (or direct) trauma inherent in medicine
- Outrage at micro- and macro-systems of healthcare; moral injury
- Unhealthy coping strategies and/or misuse of substances
- Emotional isolation from family members and friends
- Loss of sense of personal identity and professional meaning
I came into this specialty in two ways: while working with patients in hospital settings, I realized I particularly enjoyed the hours when staff would sneak into my office and close the door to process. In later therapy settings, I found healthcare workers were seeking me out again - this time, because they hoped that, as a trauma-specific therapist, I could "handle the hardest things." Turns out, it was a good match for everyone, and I've continued adapting and expanding my experience to support your field, including an additional 2-year certification and internship in Medical Family Therapy. Whether you're a doctor, nurse, student, admin, or public health worker, I'm here for you.
